The Flaminia Coupé was introduced at the Turin Motor show in 1958, nearly two years after the saloon. The styling was based on the Aurelia Florida designed by Battista Pininfarina and considered by many to be his most influential design, it was also his personal favourite and he drove one for the rest of his life. Flaminias initially had a single 'carburettored' much modified version of the Aurelia all alloy V6, initially with drum brakes but disc brakes replaced the drums early on. Triple carburettors replaced the single in 1962 and the Flaminia became the Flaminia 3B, the power went from 119 to 130bhp, in 1963 the engine was enlarged to 2.8 and the power was raised to 136bhp.
The suspension consists of unequal length double wishbones with coil springs at the front and a De Dion axle at the rear, based on the all-conquering D50, this combined with 50/50 weight distribution due to having the engine at the front and gearbox and differential (transaxle) at the rear, made for excellent handling with light and direct steering.
First registered in Rome in 1963, the car offered here then moved to Sicily some 15 years later. Having covered 96,000 kms, (approximately 59,000 miles), it is very original, has never been welded and even has the original battery tray.
Whilst this Flaminia had undergone much recommissioning work with the previous owner, (including new rear brake calipers, rebuilt starter motor, completely new exhaust system, overhauled carburettors, re-furbished wheels, new battery etc), the vendor took it upon himself to take the plunge and get the engine, (amongst other bits), extensively refurbished with well renowned experts Omicron at a cost of over £22,500, as well as getting the interior seats retrimmed in new leather at a further cost of £2,280. The vendor describes the car as driving extremely well. The white paintwork has a beautiful patina to it and retains an excellent shine, a finish that would be impossible to recreate.
The rear bumpers and overriders have been re-chromed and the front ones also present very well. The optional electric windows, (very rare), work well and the chrome/stainless steel around the windows is extremely good and as far as is known, have never been off the car. The wheels have been refurbished and all five tyres were replaced around 2018. In the boot, the rubber mats are all present, correct and undamaged.
It is important to note that all the engine, gearbox, chassis etc numbers have been confirmed as original via Lancia Classiche, a certificate of which is in the history file, along with many receipts, old MoT test certificates and V5 registration document. This example certainly represents good value against the Touring and Zagato bodied cars, which these are sure to follow.
