This 1955 Jaguar XK140 Drophead Coupe is a wonderful find for the Jaguar purist, a documented nut-and-bolt restoration by its former British owner. It is not always remembered today that the XK-series Jaguar was created almost incidentally, its purpose to promote a new engine designed for the Mark VIII saloon that was part of William Lyon’s ambitious post war plans. With its intended host still two years away from production, the sleek new aluminum-bodied XK120 was the perfect showcase. Jaguar initially planned very limited production, but its brilliant performance endeared it to sports car fans and racers throughout Europe and in North America.

By 1954 Jaguar had scored three consecutive outright wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the company announced that a new XK – the 140 – would be introduced for 1955. Chassis number 817158 and engine number G1672-8, this 1955 XK140 shows the new cast grille, full-width bumpers with overriders, chromed center trim and exterior door handles that visually distinguish it from its predecessor. In addition to its matching numbers 3.4L engine and 4-speed manual transmission, purists will also appreciate the combination of British Racing Green paint, matching painted steel wheels with center hubcaps, Coker period correct tires and rear wheel spats.

The outstanding paint and exterior brightwork are matched in quality by the wonderful interior, a really quite lavish affair with beautifully finished burled woodwork on the dash, doors and pillars, taut Biscuit upholstery and velvety carpeting. The instrumentation, brightwork and switchgear are likewise first rate. A Beige fold-down soft top and insulated boot round out the features of this great British classic. Offered with the owners’ manual, full tool roll, lug wrench, grease gun, ratchet, jack and “Thor” hammer, this 1955 XK140 is verified by the Jaguar Historical trust and is ready for touring, shows and rallying.
