Launched for the 1955 model year, the Jaguar XK 140 was largely identical to its predecessor, the sensational XK 120, the main mechanical changes being limited to repositioning the engine 7.5 cm further forward and adopting rack-and-pinion steering. Suspension and brakes remained broadly the same as before, with stronger torsion bars at the front and telescopic shock absorbers in place of lever dampers at the rear. Externally, the newcomer was distinguished by its modified grille, integrated turn signal taillights and imposing bumpers. The engine was still a 3.4-liter twin-cam 6-cylinder, now delivering 190 hp as standard.
A tighter-ratio gearbox made better use of the extra power, and an overdrive was offered as an option for the first time. Our example joined Mister P's collection in June 2022. At that time, the car is black with a burgundy interior, and hasn't been driven for a long time! Our early collector undertook a complete restoration to his exacting standards. Nothing was left to chance: full paintwork, new upholstery and soft top, as well as a complete restoration of the chassis, running gear, gearbox and engine! After all this work, there are no surprises behind the wheel: the engine sounds perfect, the gearbox is firm and makes no special noises, and the running gear is perfectly adjusted.
Carrying out a complete restoration on a car like this represents a colossal expense! Our example is truly ready to hit the road, and will delight the most demanding collectors!
