This 2011 Ferrari 458 Challenge is a pure race car—100 percent testosterone and ready to rumble. This car is a former participant in the “Ferrari Challenge” series—a single marque race series run under the auspices of the Ferrari Racing Department Corso Cliente. The North American Ferrari Challenge is currently a seven race season run at six of the premier American racing venues in the United States—such as Daytona, Sonoma, Lime Rock, Circuit of the Americas, and Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. The racing is divided into a two format class: professional drivers in the Pirelli Cup and amateur drivers in the Shell Cup.
But what differentiates a Ferrari 458 Challenge from its normal production counterpart? Quite a bit! Although they both share the same 4.5 liter V-8 producing 562 horsepower at 9,000 RPM—that’s just about the single commonly shared item between them. The car is given a massive weight reduction through the use of polycarbonate windows and windshield, thinner aluminum on the body panels and replacement of other panels with carbon fiber. Rigidity is upgraded with a roll cage, air jack mounting hardware and a fire suppression system.
The suspension is where the transformation takes place with a 2-inch drop in ride height, steel uniballs replacing rubber suspension joints, stiffer springs, special shock absorbers, 19-inch center-lock wheels, racing slicks and a very aggressive negative camber setup. The brakes are upgraded to carbon ceramic rotors and the 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission is reprogrammed with different ratios.
In 2014, the Ferrari 458 Challenge car was replaced by the new Ferrari 458 Challenge EVO, however this 458 Challenge is eligible for the U.S. based Ferrari Club Racing Championship/Association – open to all Challenge cars. – Contrary to the printed catalog description, this Ferrari Challenge Car has traveled 4,400 kilometers.
