Finding exact adjectives for its description may become challenging with this 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible. As the top-level model offered by this marque for driving enjoyment, just 815 of these cars were produced in 1958, all certainly for well-heeled clientele who had no problem with conspicuous consumption nor outstanding individuality. The model-year design marked the final iteration of the classic Cadillac shape of this decade, fully superseded by the much lower, tall-finned profiles of 1959.
At this time, 1958, Cadillac offered multiple carburation as an option, and this majestic car’s appearance is matched by its Tri-Power 365/335 HP V-8 engine, which in turn is backed by a Hydra-Matic transmission and semifloating rear axle. There are independent front coil springs as part of the suspension, with both power steering and power brakes. The exterior restyling for 1958 featured a quad headlamp layout somewhat akin to the restyled Corvette, with an almost-jeweled grille and upper bumper-like horizontal guards with Dagmar points.
Chrome accents abound on this car, edged onto the tucked-in rear fins, wide rocker covers, serious bumper depth and select vertical ribbing on sides and rear. Some brand accents are also in gold tone, with the word Eldorado spelled out on the decklid. All of this now prominently highlights a body once covered in factory Desert Bronze that has been restored in a brilliant red with a matched red leather interior. Inside are the posh Cadillac appointments reserved for upscale buyers, including power windows, air conditioning, the power convertible top, Autronic Eye, center armrest on the front seat, floor mats and a Cadillac-lettered radio.
The car is equipped with Sabre deep-edged, multi-spoke wheels wearing the classic crest center caps and wide whitewall tires. The Biarritz retained its place of honor after the following year’s radical body changes, but it was never again seen in the format of 1958.
