Aston Martin was founded in 1913 and to celebrate its centenary milestone embarked on its “second century” plan, the first manifestation of which was the DB11. Needless to say, the all-new grand tourer launched at Geneva in 2016 had a lot riding on it, not least because Aston Martin boss Andy Palmer trumpeted the latest of the illustrious DB bloodline as the most important model in the company’s history.
And it duly delivered, earning press plaudits around the world including from the British magazine Autocar, which enthused, “If there is a GT car with a better chassis, I have not driven it.” Key to that was the all-new riveted and adhesive-bonded aluminum platform chassis, which as well as elevating handling and road holding into a new realm also created more cockpit space with much improved two-plus-two accommodation compared with earlier models. Another departure was that the DB11 was the first ever series-produced turbocharged Aston Martin. The initial offering was a 5.2L twin-turbo V-12, followed by the twin-turbo 4.0L/503 HP V-8 in 2017.
Many enthusiast drivers gravitated to the V-8 model, which had 254 pounds less weight up front to improve front-rear weight distribution. With its 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, that translated into a sub-4-second 0-60 MPH time and a top speed of 187 MPH. Just as important was how it got there. Three modes from GT through to Sport and Sport Plus amplify the driving experience from serene to intense. That’s what’s seen here in the shape of this 2017 Anthracite Gray twin-turbo V-8 DB11 coupe, which has covered a relatively modest 20,381 miles.
Its red leather interior features heated and ventilated power seats, dual-zone climate control, WiFi and a premium sound system with satellite radio and Bluetooth; driving information is provided by a color TFT display, along with an 8-inch screen dedicated to infotainment and navigation, while a 360-degree camera system provides all-round vision.
Car connoisseur and critic Jeremy Clarkson summed up Aston’s defining GT thus: “If you’re ever in Paris, at a party at 3am, and suddenly remember you are playing in a tennis tournament in Monte Carlo the next afternoon, this is the car for the job.” The last part of that may be hyperbole, because as far it’s known the DB11 does not actually play tennis. Nevertheless, Clarkson concluded, “This is an extremely good car. Phenomenally good.”
