There’d been a long wait for the successor to the 2003 Aston Martin DB9 when the all-new DB11 hit the ground in 2016. Not only did the new model carry the mantle of the famed DB bloodline, it also spearheaded the British company’s drive into its second century. To invite further scrutiny, Aston Martin boss Andy Palmer trumpeted the new Aston as the most important model in its history. Fortunately, the world’s press were both shaken and stirred by the visually arresting new and first-ever turbocharged Aston Martin handcrafted around an entirely new aluminum platform that, among other things, greatly improved the 2+2 accommodation.
With its 600 HP twin-turbo 5.2L V-12 mated to a paddle-shifted 8-speed automatic transmission, the DB11 delivered 200 MPH, with 0-60 MPH coming up in 3.9 seconds. Just as important was how it got there. Three modes from GT through to Sport and Sport Plus amplified the driving experience from serene to intense. Meanwhile equipment levels and driver aids were significantly enhanced, with driving information provided by a 12-inch color TFT display along with an 8-inch screen dedicated to infotainment and satellite navigation, not to mention the 12-sensor parking assist, 360-degree cameras and 400-watt audio system.
Yet, with a spec list longer than the wait for the last James Bond movie, this 2017 DB11 with 12,387 miles on the odometer offers something more. Of course, no two DB11s are quite alike, as each one is both bespoke and handcrafted, but even in this exclusive company, this Frost White-liveried and Spice Red leather-upholstered example stands out as one of just 1,000 Launch Edition models personally signed off by Andy Palmer. That makes the 1000 Launch Edition DB11s more exclusive than the immortal DB5 was in its day.
Perhaps just as apposite today is the verdict of stern British car critic Jeremy Clarkson, who wrote, “If you’re ever in Paris, at a party at 3 a.m., and suddenly remember you are playing in a tennis tournament in Monte Carlo the next afternoon, this is the car for the job. You’d arrive feeling like you’d just got out of the bath … This is an extremely good car. Phenomenally good.”
