After scoring back-to-back SCCA B-Production racing championships for 1965-66, Shelby American unleashed its new big-block 428-powered GT500 for 1967 alongside the updated GT350. Based on Ford’s updated Mustang, which was now capable of accepting Ford’s FE-series big-block V-8 engines, Shelby American’s new 428 Police Interceptor-powered GT500 was conservatively rated at 355 HP, with actual power output closer to 400 ponies. Most importantly to performance fans, the new GT500 delivered brutal acceleration with 420 lb-ft of pavement-scorching torque just a tap of the throttle pedal away.
Praised by Car and Driver magazine road testers for “doing with ease what the old 350 took brute force to accomplish,” the GT500 added an upscale grand touring persona to Shelby’s Ford Mustang-based stallions. Shelby’s 1967 cars also represented the end of an era as the last built in California before production was transferred from Shelby American to Ionia, Michigan, under direct Ford Motor Company control for 1968-69. According to production data published by the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC), just 2,048 Fastback examples of these formidable performers were built for 1967. Bearing Shelby No. 1974, this GT500 was sold new at Jerry Alderman Ford of Indianapolis, Indiana.
As offered, it benefits from a concours-level rotisserie restoration completed in 2023 by SAAC Head Judge John Brown of Thoroughbred Restorations. Powered by a dual-quad 428 CI Police Interceptor V-8 engine paired with a Toploader 4-speed manual transmission, this GT500 is handsomely finished in Nightmist Blue Metallic paint.
