As one of the winningest racing cars ever produced on either side of the Atlantic, Carroll Shelby’s AC Ace-derived 289 and 427 Cobras are also quite likely the most replicated racing legends today. However, few of those modern recreations can lay claim to having been produced by the original “Snake Charmer,” Carroll Shelby. The product of Shelby’s drive to produce a line of official continuation Cobras during the 1990s and 2000s, the Shelby CSX4000-series cars utilized an improved original-type chassis with a choice of fiberglass, aluminum or carbon-fiber bodies.
Available as complete cars, “rollers” sans powertrain or as component cars, Shelby’s new CSX4000 Cobras were sold on a Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO) issued by Shelby, and they are duly listed in the official Cobra Registry compiled and published by the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC). Numbered CSX4221 and signed by Cobra originator Carroll Shelby, this 1965 Shelby Cobra CSX4000 Series Roadster is set up to race. Power is delivered by a supercharged Shelby-built engine, with CSX4221 being one of just 22 produced with the powerplant.
The 427/725 HP Ford FE-Series side-oiler engine is boosted by a Vortech supercharger and rated at 600 lb-ft of torque, and it’s paired with a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission. Handsomely finished in Shelby Blue paint with white stripes, the Cobra sports a businesslike black-upholstered interior equipped with black bucket seats and racing harnesses. Other competition features include a racing fuel tank, racing suspension and racing brakes. Stored inside of a temperature-controlled building when not in use, this modern continuation of the Shelby 427 Cobra legend is documented by its corresponding Shelby Automobiles Statement of Origin, dyno sheets and invoices.
