In April 1955, Rolls-Royce introduced the new Silver Cloud, which would represent the pinnacle of Rolls-Royce offerings all the way up until the end of the 1950s. Featuring its whisper-quiet, 4.9L inline 6-cylinder engine feeding power through a 4-speed automatic transmission, the Silver Cloud maintained the tried-and-true, body-on-frame construction which enabled the chassis to receive all manner of custom coachwork. The 1959 Silver Cloud on offer is one of only two examples (Design SC 20) to receive custom saloon coupe coachwork from the London-based coachbuilder, James Young.
Founded as a carriage builder in 1863, James Young would eventually be purchased, in 1937, by London Rolls-Royce dealer Jack Barclay and would go on to create a number of unique bodies for both Bentley and Rolls-Royce. Finished in Midnight Blue with a red pinstripe and St. James red leather interior, this all-aluminum Silver Cloud is the embodiment of British automotive elegance with a sumptuous interior that features a burled-walnut dashboard, door caps and even a fold-down picnic tray.
Optioned with power steering, power windows, air conditioning and finish details such as the appropriate tool kit, manual and spare wheel, this Silver Cloud was the focus of a $150,000 restoration (2010-2012), which included $35,000 invested in paint alone. But perhaps even more impressive than the quality of its restoration is the car’s well-documented ownership history. Originally built to the special order of Hollywood producer William Goetz, co-founder of 20th Century Fox, this custom-bodied Rolls-Royce was delivered to Goetz in February 1959 via the Peter Santori dealership in Pasadena, California.
Owned by Goetz until his passing in 1969, it then passed on to an East Coast developer who cared for the car until 1992. In 1997, the Silver Cloud was sold to a doctor, who commissioned a restoration. Accepted to the Pebble Beach Concours in 2004 and again in 2015, where it took a third in class, this Silver Cloud represents a unique and desirable piece of Rolls-Royce history. This prestigious motorcar has also been featured on the cover of the Post 55 Silver Cloud newsletter and took home first in class at the RROC Southern California Concours d'Elegance in 2016.
