Debuted in late 1959 alongside the Silver Cloud II and sharing its new V-8 engine, the Phantom V took place as Rolls-Royce’s largest and most opulent, elite-level model. Based on a chassis measuring 12 inches longer than that of even the long-wheelbase Silver Wraith, the Phantom V was tailor-made for the few specialist coachbuilders remaining in operation at the time. Extremely comfortable and richly appointed, the Phantom V was the motoring choice for many of the wealthiest personalities and most powerful heads of state during the 1960s and beyond.

Continuing its famous tradition of careful evolution, Rolls-Royce changed the Phantom V little through production to 1968, with 832 produced during its long run. Bearing Chassis No. 5VE21 and previously part of the world-renowned Blackhawk Collection, this 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom V features unique coachwork by James Young, the venerable British coachbuilder who produced 11 open-drive Sedanca DeVille bodies for the Phantom V chassis. Of them, this example was the only car built to Design No. PV15. Featuring a formal roofline and a true seven-passenger interior compartment, this singular Phantom V carries Body No. 9053 with power delivered by a 6230cc V-8 engine (Engine No.

E10PV), paired with a 4-speed automatic gearbox. Displayed at the 1965 Earls Court Motor Show when new, this Phantom V was formerly owned by noted collectors and enthusiasts Dr. Erle Heath and Dr. Samuel Scher. Equipped with an independent front suspension including coil springs and anti-roll torsion bar, plus a rigid rear axle located by semi-elliptic leaf springs, this Phantom V is stopped by 4-wheel, power-assisted hydraulic drum brakes. Reminiscent of the 1930s and ’40s, the distinctive “bustle trunk” rear styling characteristic of the Phantom V would go on to profoundly influence the top models from Cadillac, Chrysler and Lincoln during the 1970s and ’80s.

Other signature design cues include fender-mounted outside mirrors and the iconic Rolls-Royce “Spirit of Ecstasy” hood mascot. The Phantom V’s interior is richly appointed with leather upholstery to the driver’s cabin, Wilton wool carpeting with lamb wool overlays, burlwood interior accents, rear jump seats and picnic tables. Other highlights include power windows, square pushbutton-type door openers, Smiths instruments and period-style whitewall tires. Featured in Lawrence Dalton’s definitive book “Rolls-Royce: The Classic Elegance,” this one-of-one Phantom V also benefits from an extensive service completed during 2022.
