Brach’s: just about anyone with even a mild sweet tooth knows the name. Emil J. Brach founded the company in 1904, investing his $1,000 life savings into Brach’s Palace of Sweets at the corner of North Avenue and Towne Street in Chicago, starting with just a single kettle and the assistance of his sons Edwin and Frank. Selling his candies at a fraction of what his competitors charged and subsequently achieving a quick return on investment, Brach was able to put those proceeds toward additional equipment, which, in turn, led to higher production and even more sales.

By 1923, Brach had four factories operating at capacity, a fifth one in the works and was producing 2.23 million pounds of candy in 127 varieties, and by the end of World War II, it was recognized as the largest candy manufacturing plant in the world. Bulk, bagged candy became the company’s focus after World War II as Halloween trick-or-treating grew in popularity. For many, the company’s seasonal candies—such as candy corn and jelly beans—are why they recognize the name, but while Brach’s history might seem like it’s all sunshine and rainbows, it isn’t without its dark side.

Wearing a custom-ordered magenta color scheme, this 1971 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible, to be offered at Mecum’s 2022 Chicago auction, once belonged to Brach’s heiress, Helen V. Brach, before her mysterious disappearance and presumed murder in 1977. Read the full article
