No one would ever look at a Renault 5 and imagine that it could be modified, even heavily, to produce one of the coolest and most macho cars of the 1980s. However, that is exactly what happened when Renault’s Vice President of Production, Jean Terramorsi, was inspired by the incredible success of Lancia’s Stratos. Terramorsi asked Marc Deschamps to design a new sports version of the Renault 5 Alpine, with a back end designed by Bertone’s famed designer Marcello Gandini.

First released at the Brussels Motor Show in 1980, the Renault 5 Turbo was built on a modified Renault 5 chassis. The Turbo’s most radical change was the placement of the engine behind the driver and the change to rear-wheel drive. The engine was Renault’s C-Type four-cylinder inline engine with Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection and a Garrett T3 turbocharger. Because the standard R5 rear suspension would have interfered with the transmission, the Turbo was upgraded to rear double-wishbone and coil-spring suspension.

Looking to lower production costs but not suffer from a loss of performance, in 1983 Renault pared down the Turbo into what would become the Turbo II. This new lighter version removed the unique interior and replaced the aluminium body panels with steel, but it still retained the staggering 158 brake horsepower and used the same engine. These road-legal cars proved much more popular, and Renault produced a total of nearly 3,200 Turbo IIs out of an overall production of 5000. This is a stunning example of such a collectible model, with only 5,900 kilometres from new and aftermarket leather seats providing excellent comfort.

Personne n'aurait pu imaginer, en regardant une Renault 5, qu'elle puisse être transformée en une des voitures les plus marquantes et les plus viriles des années 1980. C'est pourtant exactement ce qui s'est produit quand Jean Terramorsi, alors sous-directeur à la direction produit de Renault, a réfléchi à une réponse à la Lancia Stratos. Terramorsi demandait à Marc Deschamps de dessiner une nouvelle version sportive de la Renault 5 Alpine, la partie arrière étant signée Marcello Gandini, célèbre designer travaillant chez Bertone.

Dévoilée pour la première fois au Salon de Bruxelles 1980, la Renault 5 Turbo reposait sur un châssis de Renault 5 modifié. Le changement le plus radical était le déplacement de la mécanique derrière le conducteur, et le passage de traction avant à propulsion. Le moteur était le Renault quatre-cylindres Type C, alimenté par une injection mécanique Bosch K-Jetronic et équipé d'un turbocompresseur Garrett T3. La suspension arrière de la Renault 5 n'étant plus adaptée, elle était remplacée par un système à double triangulation et des ressorts hélicoïdaux.

Cherchant à réduire les coûts de fabrication sans modifier les performances, Renault proposait une version plus économique, la Turbo 2. Sur cette nouvelle voiture, l'aménagement intérieur spécifique disparaissait et les panneaux aluminium étaient remplacés par de l'acier, mais elle conservait le puissant moteur de 160 ch. Entre 1983 et 1986, la production de Renault 5 Turbo 2 atteignait presque 3 200 exemplaires, sur un total de 5 000 Renault 5 Turbo toutes versions confondues. Nous présentons ici un superbe exemplaire de ce modèle désirable, qui n'affiche que 5 900 km d'origine et comporte des sièges cuir apportant un excellent confort.
