Offered by the French coachbuilder Heuliez from August 1979, the Renault 5 Le Car Van featured a conversion inspired by the American vans that were very fashionable at the time. It was essentially the rear section that received an innovative treatment: the production version's rear quarter windows were removed and replaced with an injection-moulded polyester panel incorporating a porthole edged in aluminium. The tailgate was made in a single piece of polyester, featured a rectangular window and carried the spare wheel, mounted externally beneath a cover. It opened onto a spacious rear compartment, with the rear bench removed and the floor covered in carpet.
Visually, the black bodywork was accented by a rainbow stripe, and the car sat on optional AMYL wheels. Production of this original car is estimated at around 450 units. The example presented is based on a 1981 TS version, registered in November of that year. André Trigano acquired it in 2003 from a famous Parisian trunk-maker who had owned it since 1985. Its current owner, a discerning collector, had it repainted in its original colour, reinstated the model-specific stickers and refitted the external spare-wheel mount.
The seat upholstery was re-tensioned, the wheels restored and fitted with new tyres, the brakes overhauled and the radiator replaced. Well preserved, this rare version has regained its original lustre and all the distinctive features that give it its charm. It is certainly one of the finest surviving examples.
