Throughout its storied history, Porsche has produced a wide array of homologation specials specifically engineered to meet international competition requirements while remaining—often theoretically—legal for road use. Planned as the successor to the GT1 of the late 1990s, the stunning Carrera GT entered development by Porsche’s motorsports division in 1999, but FIA rule changes frustrated its planned endurance-racing use. Nonetheless, Porsche forged ahead with the Carrera GT, repositioned as an elite road model. When production ended in May 2006, only some 1,270 examples were built in all at the new Porsche facility in Leipzig, Germany.
Of them, just 604 were destined for America’s rabid exotic supercar market, including this example, sold new in Hawaii. Powered by a midmounted 5.7L V-10 engine developing 605 HP, this 2004 Porsche Carrera GT is capable of astounding, perhaps monstrous, performance. Acceleration from rest to 60 MPH is achieved in just 3.8 seconds, with the 100 MPH mark shattered in less than 7 seconds and a 205 MPH top speed on tap. Delivering the power is a 6-speed manual gearbox and rear transaxle with the Carrera GT’s simple, yet elegant, beechwood gearshift knob recalling the Le Mans-conquering 917 race cars of years past.
Technical specifications are stunning, beginning with the Carrera GT’s carbon-fiber monocoque and aluminum subframe structures produced and assembled by Italy’s ATR Composites. Both clutch and brake components employ ceramic composite materials, and engine and transaxle mounts are of carbon-reinforced plastic. Even the massive 5-spoke wheels are made from ultra-lightweight forged magnesium. Underpinnings include ABS brakes and competition-derived, pushrod-actuated coilover shocks with inboard mounting. Similar to other contemporary Porsche models, an automated rear wing deploys above 70 MPH.
The racing-style, reinforced cockpit safety design includes front and side-impact airbags, removable carbon-fiber roof panels and black leather upholstery with supportive bucket seats, plus manual air conditioning and a lightweight center console made of galvanized magnesium. Just 3,570 miles have been accumulated by the time of writing. Eye-catching yellow brake calipers, Xenon headlamps and a wicked-sounding two-chamber stainless steel exhaust system enhance this 2004 Porsche Carrera GT’s awesome presence.
