This matching-numbers 1972 Porsche 911T Targa is finished in monochromatic factory Code 700 Black with a matching black interior. The exterior has the classic stainless-steel roll bar cover, a complete set of Fuchs forged aluminum wheels with painted-crest center caps and a “duck-tail” rear spoiler engine lid. The interior features its original dashboard and three highly desirable options: factory leather sport seats with houndstooth “pepita” cloth inserts, a four-spoke, 380mm leather-covered steering wheel with a “hockey-puck”-style center horn cap, and air-conditioning. The car shows 79,805 odometer miles on its original engine, No. 6122292.
Recent refurbishment work includes new interior rear panels, new carpet, new front and rear Targa window seals and fresh paint correction, including color sanding, body polishing and detailing. In model year 1972, Porsche made significant drivetrain improvements to the 911. The mechanical fuel-injected engine realized an increase in displacement from 2.2 to 2.4L, achieved through a larger-stroke crankshaft. This change not only made for greater horsepower and torque output, but it also enabled Porsche to maintain its performance metrics in the era of ever stringent emission control and regulation.
The transmission was also changed with the introduction of the 915 5-speed manual gearbox replacing the outgoing 901 gearbox. A far stronger and robust transmission, it also eliminated the “dog-leg” first gear shift pattern, making an H pattern for gears 1-4. This was a welcome change for many Porsche enthusiasts. Model year 1972 was also the only year of the rear fender-mounted oil filler lid, which is now regarded as a status symbol in the classic Porsche community. This 1972 Porsche 911T Targa comes complete with its original owner’s manual in the red pouch, tool kit, jack and original Targa top with factory storage bag.
