The Porsche 911 GT3 is a street-legal derivative of the racing machine that saw competition in the GT3 Cup Challenge, a North American-based one-make racing series sanctioned by IMSA. The street version is a thinly veiled race car with the direct transference of the parts and pieces from the GT3 Cup Challenge car. That said, there are a few additions and deletions that distinguish it from its Challenge Cup sibling. The first change to the street-legal GT3 is the addition of Porsche Active Stability Management that features active adjustable dampers allowing the driver to choose either a street mode or sport mode depending on circumstances.
The second welcome addition on the street car is air conditioning, a feature that is certainly much appreciated in the U.S. market. The final distinguishing factor is the deletion of the roll bar on all American-bound GT3s based on an edict imposed by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Despite these changes, this is still basically a race car with just a minimum of obligatory equipment to render it street legal. The GT3 is visually identifiable by its model-only front apron/air splitter, rear bi-wing, rear lower apron with twin exhaust tips and wide-body rear fenders. What makes the GT3 so special is its intoxicating and exhilarating driving experience.
The raucous exhaust note emanating from the 3.6L/415 HP flat-6 that revs all the way up to an 8,400 RPM redline is a signature trait of the car. The competition-derived suspension and steamroller-sized Michelin Pilot Sport tires provide tenacious grip, the cross-drilled and vented rotors deliver massive stopping power, and the short-throw linkage enables crisp gear changes, making the GT3 a visceral car requiring total driver involvement. This GT3—sporting only 21,650 miles on its odometer and presented in black with a matching black interior trimmed in both leather and Alcantara—stands ready for more thrill rides.
