Porsche’s venerable 356 reached its final and most fully realized form in 1964 with the introduction of the 356C. This new designation was largely the result of changes to engine and brake design, the latter one of the most important technical advances in the model’s history: all wheel disc brakes, a refinement that was visually signified by a new wheel and hubcap design in place of the former Porsche convention of the combined wheel and brake design that originated in the Volkswagen. An interesting aspect of the new disc brake design was the use of small rear drum brakes for parking, a system that eventually found widespread use throughout the industry.
Engine choices were simplified by dropping the lowest rated 60 HP unit and refining the remaining two engines. The 1600S or Super 75 was renamed the 1600C; the top-of-the-line Super 90 changed to 1600SC with a net rating of 95 HP and was mated to a 4-speed transaxle, both found in the aft confines of this stunning 1964 356SC coupe. A beautiful showpiece in every aspect of its presentation, its bright ivory exterior finish is paired with an immaculate red leatherette interior appointed with bucket seats, a padded dash fitted with VDO instrumentation, a clock and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio.
Riding on Wide Track Radial metric tires and showing just 11,750 miles on the odometer, this exceptional Porsche 356SC coupe represents a highly refined development of Ferdinand Porsche’s original production sports car design.
