Produced from 1955 to 1959, the Porsche 356A represented the first significant improvements to the original 356 design introduced in 1948, featuring refined body sculpturing, more interior comforts and better overall performance. Sold new at Clarence Talley Auto Co. of Dallas, Texas, this 1959 Porsche 356A Coupe was formerly owned by noted Porsche enthusiast Ersten “Bud” Dunklau, owner of Road & Track Motors of Lincoln, Nebraska. Dunklau acquired the car in 1974 and retained it until his passing in 2019. Bud refurbished the car in the late 1980s, adding several upgrades and personal touches, all complementary to the experience of driving such a wonderful classic Porsche.
Originally factory finished in Ruby Red, the Reutter-built body was taken down to bare metal and had the longitudinals replaced before refinishing it in its current PPG Duracrylic Red acrylic lacquer in the 1980s, which remains in excellent condition. Contrasting Ivory-painted 15-inch steel wheels with chrome hubcaps, trim rings and 185/70 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires complement the car’s presentation, which also includes a matching spare wheel and hubcap fitted in the front trunk, body-color bumpers with chromed overriders, teardrop tail lights, Bosch H1 headlights, a single grille engine cover, a driver’s side mirror and an added third brake light.
Porschephiles will also appreciate the overall interior treatment, which offers tan vinyl and velour upholstery, Recaro bucket seats, VDO green-letter gauges, a rare Racemark wood-rimmed steering wheel and a Craig AM/FM/cassette radio; a bronze “1950-1957 Deutsch Sportwagen Meister Schaften” dash plaque is a fitting finishing touch. Dunklau also performed an extensive array of significant mechanical upgrades, most notably installing a Porsche 912 1600cc air-cooled flat 4-cylinder engine backed by a 4-speed manual transaxle.
He also replaced the original drum brakes with later 356C 4-wheel disc units actuated by a dual-circuit master cylinder for added safety and upgraded the electrical system to 12 volts. Additionally, the car employs a front anti-roll bar and rear camber compensating spring, as well as a larger capacity 80-liter fuel tank. In essence, Bud Dunklau’s refinements to this unique 1959 356A coupe improved on the original while maintaining its classic Porsche character, making it truly one of a kind.
