The Plymouth Duster was a huge innovation in Plymouth’s refreshed 1970 model line, as a fastback Valiant taking direct aim at the performance end of the economy-car marketplace stocked with competition like the Chevy Nova or upstart Ford Maverick. The car here was originally built up back in the 1970s with go-fast parts sourced using the factory Direct Connection catalog. Direct Connection was the predecessor of Mopar Performance Parts and featured tested parts combinations that had been developed by the company’s engineering group. Stellantis brought the name back in 2022.
This Duster had been stored away for approximately 30 years before being rediscovered and restored to its present condition. Power here came from the company’s legendary “leaning tower of power,” the 225 CI Slant Six inline-6. Atop the mill is a high-compression cylinder head, the special Hyper Pak-style long-ram 4-barrel intake manifold, a header pipe and electronic ignition. This in turn is backed by a reworked manual-shift TorqueFlite automatic transmission and an 8.75-inch differential with 4.88 gears. The exterior of the car is finished in FM3 Moulin Rouge, better known as Panther Pink on Dodge products.
This is highlighted by hood blackout and a scoop with “225 Hyper Pack” lettering, customized side stripes, lower rocker blackout and a Go-Wing rear spoiler. The interior was reworked with the installation of lighter front seats, a B&M Pro Ratchet shifter, the vintage tach and gauge package, and an aftermarket steering wheel. There is even a period JVC audio unit in the dash. The crowning touch here is old-school U.S. Mags Indy slotted-type wheels, with raised-white-letter radial tires that include larger-size rear versions.
