The 1970s opened with a lot of excitement, and Plymouth was “out to win you over” that year. Radio advertisements from the era proclaimed the Duster was ready to be customized any way you wanted, and the car here took them at their word. Given a rotisserie refresh, this first-year fastback A-body now sports a multitude of upgrades throughout, with select build receipts included in this sale. Here, power comes from a small-block Mopar engine in the form of a modified 360 CI V-8 LA-series engine.
The motor is detailed and features an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake hosting a 650 CFM Edelbrock carburetor with electric choke, coated headers feeding dual exhaust, an MSD ignition with billet distributor, perfect cast Mopar Performance valve covers and air cleaner, and an upgraded aluminum radiator with dual fans. Behind this is a reworked A727 Torqueflite automatic transmission, and the car’s 8 ¼-inch rear axle now hosts Auburn 3.70 gearing. The suspension has been retrofitted extensively as well, with an AlterKtion front K-member, tubular upper and lower arms, power rack-and-pinion steering, a 1-1/4” front sway bar, Viking coilover shocks, and 4-wheel disc brakes.
Also, the rear springs have been moved inboard and subframe connectors were added underneath. The clean 1970 model appearance still has that stock look, with rich black paint and the OEM grille design intact. Inside a new black interior has been added. This includes bucket seats, factory center console with floor shift, NVU dash gauges, a premium Alpine AM/FM/CD/USB/MP3 stereo outfit, and three-spoke Tuff Wheel steering wheel. Outside are body-color dual mirrors and a set of beautiful five-spoke polished American Racing wheels, 15×6 front and 15×10 rear, wearing M/T Sportsman tires.
Back in the day, the Duster found a huge niche with sport-oriented buyers who did not want big-block insurance payments as well as those who wanted more style than a Valiant, Dart or Nova offered. Here is that first-year look with an excellent selection of aftermarket changes that will turn heads, turn corners and look good just standing still.
