Chrysler Corporation’s smaller models on the A-body platform offered budget performance, and few could argue that the best of them arrived in 1971, when this model of the fastback Duster arrived. The one offered here is a true standout as a two-time Mopar Nationals winner (first place and a 25th anniversary award in 1996, as well as a 30th anniversary award in 2001), an AACA Senior National and Grand National winner, and the high-point car at Chrysler's at Carlisle SME in 2008, and it comes with owner history from new with copies of titles and the original MSO.
Beyond that, this 340 Plymouth was selected by AMT ERTL Co. for its 1971 Duster model and showcased as a centerspread in Muscle Car Review magazine. Sold new in North Carolina, it has spent most of its existence in North Carolina and Virginia. Its rotisserie restoration was done by Castlemill Restorations. This example is dramatic, to say the least. For this release, the factory hood was blacked out with a large “340 WEDGE” logo on the driver’s side, the reworked “shark tooth” vertical slat grille defined the front end, and the car stepped far away from its Valiant roots.
The 340 kept 10.3:1 compression for 1971 and also received the huge Carter Thermoquad carburetor, whose air valve design always gave the engine exactly the amount of fuel it demanded. This is backed by an A833 4-speed manual transmission and 8.75-inch differential. Firm ride shock absorbers and heavy-duty suspension give it road manners, with power steering to assist. The exterior is painted in very desirable factory FE5 Red with body-color mirrors, hood pins, exhaust tips and black 340 graphics. The black interior features bucket seats, a floor-mount Hurst shifter, three-spoke Tuff steering wheel, OEM tach and gauges, an AM radio and a driver’s remote mirror.
Finally, this car rides on a set of 14-inch Rallye wheels and Goodyear Polyglas E70-14 tires. A photo album of its restoration is included. It has even ran a 13.2-second quarter mile with the original, date-coded engine. For those seeking the ultimate OEM A-body Duster, this one might very well be it.
