Plymouth’s Duster was a real chameleon in its day, a versatile compact platform that could be equipped for everything from mild transportation duty to street/strip action. This black-on-black custom definitely leans to the street tough end of that spectrum, thanks to its engine and chassis upgrades and no-frills exterior finish. The business end of the Duster houses a 360 CI big-block Mopar V-8 modified with an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold mounting an Edelbrock 650-CFM carburetor with electric choke. An MSD ignition and billet distributor light the engine’s fire, while coated headers vent the spent gases.
Engine dress-up includes Mopar Performance cast valve covers and a matching air cleaner, and an aluminum radiator with dual fans keeps the engine cool when it’s working hard. This potent package is backed by a reworked 727 automatic transmission and an 8-1/4-inch rearend with 3.70 Auburn gears and Positraction differential. Muscle cars from the 1970s weren’t known for their handling, but this Duster will change that attitude thanks to a suspension that’s been reworked with power rack-and-pinion steering, an AlterKtion front K-member, tubular upper and lower front control arms, Viking coilover shocks and a front sway bar.
Subframe connectors add rigidity to the chassis, and the rear springs have been moved inboard to make room for the car’s serious 10×28 Mickey Thompson Sportsman rear tires. There are M/Ts up front too, size 6×26, and all four tires are mounted on polished American Racing five-spoke wheels. The Duster’s black bucket-seat interior has received big, white-face NVU gauges in front of the driver. The sound system has been upgraded too, with an Alpine AM/FM/CD player that has USB and MP3 capabilities. This bad, blacked-out Duster is being offered at Kissimmee with receipts and other build information.
