This 1932 Packard Light Eight Coupe Roadster adds an aura of opulence to the Powers Collection of fine automobiles. The Classic Car Club of America has declared the 1932 Packard Light Eight a “Full Classic,” and rightly so; not only is it historically significant, it was an anachronism in the company’s history, rushed through the design phase, submitted to extreme tortures during accelerated testing and development, only to be dropped from production after barely a year and never to be offered again. The Light Eight was the first new production Packard since 1923, and aesthetically and mechanically, the most thoughtfully designed as its mission was to attract new buyers to the brand.
Packard design began with the radiator shell, and the Light Eight continued that custom, but with a twist; the sides flowed down and forward to meet at a point at the bottom center, and the fenders swept down to meet it in a front splash panel, eliminating the crossbar that was a convention of automotive design. This required strengthening the frame, resulting in the strongest Packard chassis yet. The Light Eight’s engine came with slight modifications from the Standard Eight, a 320/110 HP inline-8, its exceptional smoothness matched by the full synchromesh—and virtually silent—3-speed transmission.
A new Ride Control system employing driver-adjustable shock absorbers and simplified lubrication were also introduced in the Light Eight, which was available in four body styles, including the particularly sporty rumble-seat coupe roadster offered here. A fresh restoration of truly impeccable quality, its two-tone Paquin Green paint and Olive convertible top are contrasted inside with supple brown leather upholstery and beautiful burled-wood inserts.
Wide whitewalls on painted wires with chromed center caps and rings, dual side-mount spares in painted and chrome-trimmed cases, a luggage rack and a Goddess of Speed radiator mascot complete this 1932 Packard Light Eight Coupe Roadster, which has been exquisitely finished and detailed in a manner worthy of this splendid American classic.
