This is a custom built replica of the Wood Brothers Mercury street version racecar that Hall of Fame Elect David Pearson drove to defeat Hall of Fame driver Richard Petty in the memorable 1976 Daytona 500. In that famous race, both drivers spun off the track as they approached the finish line, Pearson was able to recover first to take the checkered flag in what was arguably the most exciting Daytona 500 race finish ever. Recently elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, David Pearson had one of the most distinguished racing careers in motorsports.
This street version replica racecar was custom built by Gateway Classic Mustang and features a Ford Racing 521 V8 engine, a characteristic body style and paint job that evokes nostalgia to all classic racing fans. The car was purchased by long time foundation supporters Tom & Diane Day at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, and donated back to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation for auction at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Palm Beach, Florida. Established in 2002 by Champion Drag Racer Darrell Gwynn and his wife, Lisa, the foundation's mission is to provide awarness, prevention, support and ultimately a cure for paralysis.
