SLR: since 1955 those initials, standing for "Sport Leicht Rennsport" (Sport Light Racing), have represented Mercedes-Benz engineering at its finest and most daring. The original 300SLR was derived from the great Mercedes-Benz W196 Grand Prix racers that first captured the Formula One World Championship in 1954. They repeated the feat the following year, compounding that remarkable success by scoring the World Sports Car Championship with the 1955 300SLR, essentially the W196 with full bodywork. Introduced in 2003, the new-generation SLR paid homage to M-B’s modern-era racing collaboration with Formula One partner McLaren.
Driven just 4,666 miles since new, this 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren showcases its combination of Formula One-inspired styling and engineering in dazzling metallic silver, a virtual necessity for this latest generation of the Silver Arrow lineage. Opening the SLR’s gullwing doors—a nod to the 1950s original—reveals the special-order red-and-black leather interior, an optional extra priced at $9,900; the matching two-tone multifunction sport steering wheel added another $800 to the final price tag of over $450,000.
Exclusive standard equipment includes leather-upholstered carbon-fiber bucket seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, a high-quality BOSE premium sound system and a navigation system. The three-pointed star decorating the SLR’s F1-inspired nose cone also serves a more functional purpose, feeding fresh air to the car’s hand-assembled, supercharged and intercooled 5.5L/617 HP V-8 engine.
Bellowing through chrome-tipped side-exhaust outlets in classic SLR fashion, the incredibly compact 3-valve SOHC V-8 works in concert with a paddle-shifted, electronically controlled AMG Speedshift R 5-speed automatic transmission to launch the SLR to 60 MPH in 3.6 seconds, culminating in a top speed of 207 MPH. The car’s driver-adjustable rear spoiler/air brake, traction stability control, carbon-ceramic disc brakes and turbine-style alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires counter the SLR’s astonishing acceleration with tenacious handling and stopping power. Mercedes-Benz heritage, McLaren engineering and supercar performance make this modern-day classic worthy of the SLR title.
