McLaren’s greatest success in competition outside of Formula 1 is surely Kokusai Kaihatsu Racing’s victory at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans with the F1 GTR, chassis number 01R, driven by Yannick Dalmas, J.J. Lehto, and Masanori Sekiya. Remarkably, it was McLaren’s first outing at the famous French endurance race, and three other F1 GTRs run by privateers took 3rd, 4th, and 5th overall.
To honor the Tokyo Ueno Clinic-sponsored F1 GTR and its historic victory at Circuit de la Sarthe, British engineering specialist Lanzante created a limited run of specially modified “LM 25” McLarens in 2020—25 years after chassis 01R took the top spot at Le Mans. A stalwart of historic racing with an official McLaren service center in Petersfield, England, Lanzante started as a race team in the 1970s and was chosen to run the Kokusai Kaihatsu-sponsored car that conquered Le Mans in 1995.
Lanzante converted only seven models to LM 25 specification, one for each of the F1 GTRs entered in the 1995 endurance race. Each LM 25 is a one-off, built on a different McLaren supercar—the 600LT Spider, 620R, 765LT Spider, P1 GTR, P1 HDK, Senna, and Senna GTR. Special features include aerodynamic enhancements to the bodywork, two-tone grey paintwork inspired by the Tokyo Ueno Clinic livery of the Le Mans-winning F1 GTR, grey-tinted exposed carbon fiber elements, five-spoke, center-locking, forged aluminum and carbon fiber wheels, and gold brake calipers with red McLaren lettering.
This one-of-one Senna GTR LM 25 was ordered in August 2020 by its first owner. A copy of the original purchase invoice indicates that Lanzante converted it to LM 25 specification and carried out work to make it road legal at a total cost of £250,000. In February 2021, Lanzante applied paint protection film, and in March 2021 the car was shipped to Bremerhaven, Germany, via McLaren Paris.
The car returned to Lanzante’s Petersfield workshop for a two-year, routine service in July 2022, with mileage logged at 1,620 kilometers in the service and warranty booklet, and once more in September 2023 for an oil change and a new battery and tires at 1,731 kilometers, as indicated on the service invoice. In June 2023, the McLaren appeared at the London Concours and won the event’s Supercar Day Award. The consignor acquired the car in May 2024 and commissioned Lanzante to federalize it before importing the McLaren to the United States in August 2024.
This Senna GTR LM 25 benefits from measures that reportedly reduce curb weight by 90 pounds versus the standard model. Discreet visual references to the Le Mans-winning McLaren include the racing number 59 etched on the lower door glass and Tokyo Ueno Clinic-sponsor decals on the carbon fiber monocoque shell, visible only when the car’s dihedral doors are lifted open. Inside, ultra-light carbon fiber-shell seats customized with LM 25 logos on the headrests mimic those of the F1 GTR and feature blue and red Willans multi-point harnesses. Other unique details include gold-finished pedals and switchgear, a carbon fiber steering wheel with gold-finished paddle shifters, and various subtle references to the 1995 win, such as a faithful rendition of the scrutineering decal on the rear bulkhead.
Driven approximately 400 miles under current ownership and with just 1,795 miles indicated at cataloguing time, this Senna GTR LM 25 presents an incredibly rare opportunity to enjoy one of McLaren’s most track-focused creations on the road, thanks to it being road legal. It is accompanied by file folders and a flight case that includes driver and passenger intercom headsets, a center-locking wheel removal tool, and various spare parts.
