Introduced in 2017, the McLaren 720S redefined the McLaren road car brand, earlier established by the 12C and succeeding 650S, with a provocative combination of sinister styling, monumental power and incredible driver engagement. The second of McLaren’s planned string of “Super Series” hypercars, the 720S is built on the company’s proprietary carbon fiber Monocage II passenger cell. Entered through a signature pair of dihedral doors, the Monocoque II cell is designed to provide a high strength, lightweight and highly rigid platform for maximum protection and exceptional chassis dynamics.
More than 1,000 hours of wind tunnel time produced the 720S’ sleek outer envelope, the overall theme and details of which were inspired by the world’s foremost predator, the great white shark. Central to the car’s character is the mid-mounted M840T 4.0L DOHC V-8 engine, an all-alloy engineering marvel incorporating a flat plane crank, twin turbochargers, dry sump oiling and Formula One-derived engine controls to produce the 720 PS (710HP) that inspired the 720S moniker. The 840T powerplant works through a Graziano 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox to hurl the 720S to 60 MPH in a lightning quick 2.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 212 MPH at its 7,000 RPM redline.
With aero contributions that include tunneled bodywork, an active carbon fiber rear spoiler that also serves as an airbrake, and tail panel-exiting dual exhaust, McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control System II integrates a wide array of technologies designed to optimize the car’s extraordinary handling, including launch control, adaptive damping with Comfort, Sport and Track modes, and carbon ceramic 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS.
