  • One of only 289 4.7-litre models made
  • Rare right-hand drive version
  • Present ownership since 1997

One of the first 'new generation' models to appear following Maserati's acquisition by Citroën, the Bora used the latter's hydraulics technology to adjust seats and pedals, raise the headlamps, and operate the excellent power-assisted brakes. A slippery shape plus 310bhp made for a very fast car - top speed was over 160mph - and the Bora had acceleration, handling and braking to match. The subsequent 4.9-litre version was even faster. The total produced was only 564, the 4.7/4.9-litre split being 289/235. Finally phased out during 1979, the Bora was a stunning supercar by any standards, both then and now.

This right-hand drive Bora was acquired for £30,000 by the late owner in 1997, its keeper at that time being Mr Grenville Griffiths of Etchingham (from 1988). The previous keeper was Salma International Engineering Ltd of Bromley (1981), effectively the same owner as above (Griffiths). The Maserati had been advertised in

Trident

magazine as follows: "1976 RHD Bora, My ownership the last 16 years, one previously. Mechanically, bodily and interiorwise (sic) this is a virtually perfect Bora, truly unmarked and factory fresh. Jack Levy described it as the best Bora he has ever seen (

Trident

no. 63) 21,248 miles (yes, really)."

Mr Griffiths had the Bora restored during his ownership, including a repaint from silver to dark metallic blue, and details and photographs are on file. A sum of

circa

£35,000 was spent on the rebuild. During the late owner's custodianship, regular maintenance, servicing and MoTs were carried out by Ferdi's Garage of Lytham, Lancashire from 1997 to 2018. Parts were obtained from marque specialists Bill McGrath Maserati. When the car was last MoT'd in 2018 the odometer reading was recorded as 22,514 miles and is now 22,556 (in 1986 when it was registered 'PUL 825R' the mileage was 20,517.
