  • A highly original example
  • Benefits from some recommissioning

The Land Rover Series I is one of the most significant vehicles in British automotive history, first introduced in 1948 as a simple, rugged and highly versatile four-wheel-drive utility vehicle. Designed in the aftermath of the Second World War, it was intended to be a practical all-purpose machine that could serve farmers, industry, and export markets, helping to rebuild economies and infrastructure. Built around a lightweight aluminium body and a steel chassis, the Series I was engineered for durability rather than comfort. Its straightforward mechanical layout made it easy to repair in remote locations, a key factor in its global success.

Early models were powered by a 1.6 litre petrol engine, later upgraded to larger units as demand for more capability increased. With its distinctive narrow track, exposed door hinges, and minimalist interior, the Series I developed a reputation for reliability and go-anywhere ability. It quickly became popular in rural communities, military service, and exploration, earning a legendary status in challenging environments worldwide.

Originally registered on 11th August 1949, this is a lovely unrestored example of a 2.0 litre Land Rover Series I, from the second year of production. Thought to have had only three previous keepers, this highly original example was sold by Rupert Leng Land Rovers in the Scottish Borders in 1992, the owner kept the car for some 30 years. It presents in exceptionally honest condition, retaining much of its original character and patina, reflecting careful long-term stewardship rather than restoration. Some recent recommissioning has been carried out, including replacement of the canvas tilt, ensuring it is ready for use while remaining faithful to its history.

The vehicle has benefitted from sympathetic maintenance throughout its life, preserving its authenticity and mechanical integrity. Supplied with a V5 registration document, together with a history folder, this quintessentially British 4x4 would be a perfect addition to someone's collection. Consigned by Stewart Banks
