Land Rover imported just 500 Defender 90 NAS to the United States in 1995, and this 1995 Land Rover Defender 90 NAS is No. 223. Originally a California truck, this example has had four owners and was held by the prior owners for 12 years. Recently restored by HHH Heritage at a cost of $80,000, it’s been refinished in factory Arles Blue with a white top and features an updated suspension, a new Bluetooth stereo system with four speakers and an amplifier, LED lighting updates and more. While the Defender was known for a more utilitarian nature, the gray interior features bucket seats, cloth and vinyl upholstery, a center console and air conditioning among its highlights.
Accompanied by a parts inventory and invoices, this D90 is fitted with a 5-speed manual transmission and, of course, 4-wheel drive. Since the late 1940s, Land Rover has been supplying highly capable off-road vehicles to the world for various purposes including trail foraging, farming, camping and hunting. Interestingly, the company began building off-road vehicles after World War II, with England having been exposed to a number of General Purpose military vehicles during the war. Around 1983, the Land Rover Series vehicles evolved into the Defender line, with 1990 showing a major turning point as the Discovery was introduced.
Imported into the North American market as the Defender 90 or Defender 110, the numbers referencing the wheelbases, the off-roader was popular enough to spark the founding of a number of restoration shops and aftermarket companies to service and refurbish them. Importation ceased in 1997 as safety regulations tightened up, creating a bit of a vacuum and increasing popularity.
