Lamborghini introduced the compact V-10-powered Gallardo in 2003 as a stablemate to its V-12 models, the Murcielago and that car’s successor, the Aventador. Named, following Lamborghini tradition, after a famed fighting bull, the Gallardo became Lamborghini’s best-selling model with a 10-year production run of 14,022 cars. Only 618 of those, however, were issued bearing the Superleggera name paying tribute to the first Lamborghini, the 350 GT designed and built by Carrozzeria Touring. The word “Superleggera” translates from the Italian as “super light,” a term that refers to a coachbuilding technique emphasizing weight reduction.
In today’s world, achieving that same end means substituting carbon fiber wherever possible, and the Superleggera version of the aluminum-spaceframed Gallardo is lighter than the standard model by a full 220 pounds by using carbon fiber for the engine cover, rear diffuser, undertray, mirror housings, interior door panels, central tunnel and seat frames; the last few ounces were saved by using titanium wheel nuts. Driven just 322 original miles, this 2008 Gallardo Superleggera is an arresting sight in brilliant Arancio Borealis paint with black sill stripes and a Nero Perseus leather interior.
Further weight was saved with the optional carbon package that surrounds the aluminum 5.0L/530 HP V-10 with multi-port fuel injection, Variable Geometry intake system and variable valve timing. A paddle-shifted, dry-clutch 6-speed E-gear transmission, limited-slip differential and rear-biased all-wheel drive complete the Superleggera’s superb drivetrain, transforming the V-10’s explosive power into incredible performance through all-wheel aluminum double-wishbone suspension and power 4-wheel disc brakes to sticky Pirelli P-Zero Cobra tires on 19-inch aluminum wheels. More than a sensational track machine, the Superleggera is also well equipped for touring.
In addition to front-end lift, tinted glass, power folding mirrors, dual-zone climate control and electronic stability, this fiery raging bull features such valuable extras as a carbon-fiber rear wing, navigation and a rearview camera.
