The Jensen Interceptor was introduced for 1966 and completely gobsmacked the press and public with its unique design, luxurious interior and extensive docket of standard amenities. Chiefly impressive was the use of the 383 CI V-8 engine and 3-speed automatic transmission by Chrysler. The duo offered effortless acceleration at any speed and easily powered the numerous accessories. By 1971, the Interceptor featured several improvements, including the use of Chrysler’s even more potent 440 CI V-8, which would beget the era of the Interceptor III. Continuing to give customers reason to think about Interceptor, in March of 1974, a convertible was introduced.
The III would be the final iteration of the marque, and the last car rolled out of the factory in September 1976. In that roughly two-year span, just 467 Interceptor convertibles were built. This Interceptor III, now sporting an older restoration, was originally constructed in March 1976 and delivered new to the United States. The 440 CI V-8 is fitted with a dual exhaust system and the TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission. The Medium Blue Metallic paint is tempered with subtle brightwork, such as front and rear bumpers with guards and wide rocker moldings. The beige interior and fawn-colored convertible top contrast beautifully with the exterior color.
Equipped with power steering and Dunlop power-assisted 4-wheel hydraulic disc brakes, the capable chassis features a front suspension of independent coil springs and a rear suspension with semi-elliptic leaf springs. Passengers revel in an interior splashed with wood-grain trim, bucket seats, power windows, a Becker Europa pushbutton cassette radio, an in-dash clock, Jaeger instrumentation, air conditioning and tinted glass. Priced around $26,000 in 1976, the Jensen Interceptor was considered competition for a variety of exclusive, high-end vehicles, including the Aston Martin V-8, the Rolls-Royce and Bentley Corniche, the Iso Grifo and the Jaguar E-Type and XJS.
Celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis, Cliff Richard and many others gravitated to the Interceptor for its performance, exotic looks, exclusivity and performance.
