If Ferrari’s midengined F355 challenged the adage that any true Ferrari must have V-12 power, the succeeding 360 Modena put it to rest permanently. Improving on the 355 was no easy task; it was the best-selling model in Ferrari history at more than 10,000 units and was considered an instant classic, but Ferrari was up to the task. A clean sheet design, the 360 Modena was larger overall to offer more interior room yet just 175 pounds heavier thanks to an all-aluminum chassis and suspension developed in concert with Alcoa. Its Pininfarina body, also aluminum, harked directly back to the gorgeous 250 LM racer and featured undercar aerodynamics that negated the need for external aero aids.

Central to the 360 Modena’s character was its midmounted, 3.6L, 40-valve V-8 engine, which at 400 HP was the most powerful normally aspirated V-8 in Ferrari history, made all the better by the choice of either a 6-speed manual or the superb paddle-shifted F1 automatic gearbox. In all, the 360 Modena was as close to perfect as any road Ferrari to its time—to the extent that it became the basis for the first Ferrari factory GT racer since the 512 BB LM 20 years earlier. Of course, Ferrari tradition calls for most new berlinetta models to be followed by a spider alternative, which in the case of the 360 Modena arrived in 2000.

It presented with the same awe-inspiring mechanicals and performance and retained the coupe’s Plexiglas engine cover, and its lines were further enhanced after the 20 seconds it took for the top to disappear beneath a hard tonneau. Showing just 6,012 miles, this 2001 Ferrari 360 Spider shows why this model has enjoyed lasting favor among enthusiasts. Combining beautiful Grigio Alloy paint with a power-operated blue soft top and beige leather bucket-seat interior, it is nicely trimmed out with quad exhaust tips and silver brake calipers behind modular five-spoke alloy wheels on Michelin radial tires.
