In the late 1950s, Ferrari constructed a series of 3.0L sports racing cars to compete in the World Sports Car Championship, as well as the highly prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. These cars were known as 250 Testa Rossas (Red Heads) and dominated the endurance racing scene from 1957 to 1961, including victory at Sebring in 1958, ’59 and ’61, as well as three victories at Le Mans in 1958, ’60 and ’61. The last, and perhaps ultimate, iteration of the Le Mans-winning Testa Rossa was the TR61 spider, a sleek, front-engined sports car that carried Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien to victory at Le Mans in 1961, followed in second place by the TR61 sister car of Willy Mairesse and Mike Parkes.
This Ferrari started life as a 1965 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 (Chassis No. 08109) and was delivered to Jacques Swaters’ famed Garage Francorchamps in Brussels, Belgium. The car eventually made its way to the U.S., where it lived until 1995 when it was acquired by Motorima Coachbuilding Company of Rydaholm, Sweden. Motorima then proceeded to rebody the car as an exacting replica of the 1961 250 TR61 with a handcrafted aluminum body fashioned using factory drawings.
Today, this stunning TR61 recreation is painted in Grigio Argento red with blue upholstered seats, and it features a true 3967cc Ferrari V-12 engine (Engine No. 6251GT) that transmits 300 HP through its 5-speed transmission and recently received an engine-out reseal and service in 2020 by DriverSource in Houston, Texas. The car is accompanied by various pieces of documentation, including copies of the original invoice, build sheets and factory documents, a mechanical restoration photo file and a Ferrari authority Marcel Massini history report.
The Ferrari also comes with its Suixtil drivers bag, driving gloves and Pacto helmet, original artwork by Wayne Huffaker and original MG-built TR “Shark Nose” Ferrari licensed pedal car, circa 1961. This Ferrari marks a unique opportunity to own a front-engined Ferrari sports racing car that would be welcomed at a host of international events.
