Chassis 5839 is one of 503 Series 1 330 GT 2+2s built from 1963 to 1965, and of just 36 configured in right-hand drive. The striking
gran turismo
was ordered via UK Ferrari importer, Maranello Concessionaires, and was collected from the factory by its first owner, Mr Swan, prior to being road registered on 22 July 1964. The entire purchase process was documented by period correspondence between the owner and Maranello Concessionaires’ Colonel Ronnie Hoare, which is available to view on file.
Hand-written service notes indicate that the car was used as its makers intended, covering some 45,000 miles by August 1971. The Ferrari then passed through the hands of three UK owners before being exported to the United States in the late 1970s; by 1978 it was owned by an enthusiast in Santa Barbara, California. According to accompanying insurance certificates, from 1983 until at least 1992 the car belonged to another California-based owner, with further invoices indicating that from 2005 until 2012 it was in the care of an enthusiast in Del Mar.
In 2014 the car was repatriated to the UK by Hexagon Classics, after which it was subject to an extensive £73,000 rebuild by Joe Macari that included a gearbox and suspension overhaul, invoices for which are available to view on file. The Ferrari was sold on in April 2015 and remained with its new owner until passing through auction in July 2018. The car was later acquired by the current owner before being registered in his name on 4 May 2021.
