As 1957 models arrived, new advances in American automobile designs emerged, and none more so than Chrysler’s stunning Forward Look designs. Lower roof lines and crisp fins would forever define the Virgil Exner era of Chrysler, and one of the most stunning from this epochal year of the 1950s was the 1957 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer. The near-monotone Dodge appearances leading up to this moment disappeared, and the rest of the industry quickly worked to catch up. The car here is even a more exclusive release, as it is a convertible equipped as a Model D67-2, featuring the then-new, scarce and expensive “Super D-500” V-8 engine option.
Given a rotisserie restoration in the mid-1990s, many of its mechanical components were rebuilt at that time, including the 325 CI, 310 HP Super-D Hemi V-8 engine. This release, superseding the more race-oriented D500-1 Hemi of 1956, came with dual Carter WCFB 4-barrel carburetors, separate air cleaners painted gold, and metallic-tone engine paint. On this example, the engine was followed by a pushbutton-shifted 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. This car was also equipped with power steering, uniquely stated right on the steering wheel itself, and has power brakes and a power top as well.
Exner’s purest ideal shines through here, chrome edging on crisp lines defining its Flame Red and Glacier White exterior. The white convertible top features a red boot, and there are also gold Dodge front and rear badging, dual hood bullets and a 1957 Minnesota license plate. Inside, one finds red vinyl 60/40 split front bench seating with black fabric inserts, the two-tone steering wheel, Pushbutton AM radio and tinted glass. Final outside highlights are the rear-angled dual antennas, dual side mirrors, polished diffusers on the dual exhaust and a set of black steel wheels that feature polished knight’s head wheel covers and wide whitewall BF Goodrich Silvertown tires.
Scarce both now and then, this Royal Lancer Hemi convertible will be an honor to take home.
