There was a lot of excitement introduced from all of Detroit’s major builders in 1957, and the Forward Look styling that blossomed from Chrysler is well-represented in this beautiful 25,000-mile two-tone 1957 Dodge Royal Custom. The beneficiary of a comprehensive frame-off restoration in March 2019 by Ray Skillman Classic Cars, this hardtop model was part of the releases that helped created major market excitement for the company that year. Designer Virgil Exner’s studios had rendered a complementary group of fins, colors and cab design that, with the Custom Royal, resulted in the premium model from the Dodge Division.
Cleanly executed with a sporty flair, these 1957 releases are still considered the apex of the 1955-59 Custom Royal production cycle in terms of design. Not often seen today, these are also cars that have come into their own as quite desirable once the difficult effort at refreshing one has been completed, which is seen on this example. This car retains its original interior and carpets. Under the expansive hood is the Super Red Ram 325-CI V-8 engine topped with a WCFB carburetor, OEM-style air cleaner and red engine decaling. This is backed by the pushbutton-shifted automatic transmission.
The exterior and engine bay is done in red paint, complemented with white lower body and roof paint, all separated with carefully designed and applied chrome accents that highlight the body lines. Inside, one finds a matching red and white interior, two-tone steering wheel, round-faced functional gauging and factory pushbutton radio. Rear-mounted twin antennae offer more styling here, as do the Custom Royal script callout emblems, dual outside mirrors, under-bumper exhaust dress-ups, Truspoke wire wheels and whitewall radial tires. Importantly, this car’s provenance includes an original broadcast sheet and will also be accompanied by a book of restoration photos.
The Dodge Royal Custom was well-named, the top-billed act from Chrysler’s emerging sport division. This 1957 edition in red and white with Super Red Ram power befits Dodge’s heritage appropriately.
