Born during the economic uncertainty of early 1958, this Dodge Custom Royal with Spring Special trim was built as a Super D-500 on the convertible platform. This very low production model, estimated possibly as low as 20 units in total, has been given a frame-off restoration using NOS or rebuilt parts wherever possible, and it is documented with a factory build sheet. The Spring Special was a group of accent parts introduced to help promote sales, including a wide chrome license plate mount, full-length belt line molding, fin end caps and a grille emblem.
However, the real feature on the Royal Lancer was the new 361 CI B-series big-block V-8 wedge-head engine with dual 4-barrel carburetors seen here. Called the Super D-500 (standard D-500s got a single carb), it was rated at 320 HP. Here, this is backed by a pushbutton shifted TorqueFlite automatic transmission, and this car also has power steering and brakes. The Royal Lancer was among the redesigned models from Dodge that year, best noted for the soaring tailfins. The two-tone exterior in dark and light shades of green features a power-operated black convertible top protecting the black and white interior.
Bright accents within include the metallic door panels, dash facing, steering wheel center and script Dodge emblem. There is a power seat and power windows, with the radio equipped with dual rear-mount antennas. Outside is a combination of deluxe chrome and gold-tone accents, with model insignias done in script format except for the bold “DODGE” letters seen on the leading edge of the hood. The look is completed with full-size spinner hubcaps on steel wheels hosting wide whitewall tires. Being the first Dodge big-block wedge featuring multiple carburation is nice, but the rest of this convertible’s excellent presentation and rare status is perhaps even more appealing.
