Chrysler breathed new life into its New Yorker model line for 1955 after turning the keys to the design studio over to the talented Virgil Exner. Using styling cues from his 1952 Imperial Parade Phaeton show car, Exner remodeled the New Yorker with a bold split egg-crate front grille over a three-tiered bumper, sweeping side spears and chrome-encased “twin tower” tail lights, and specified sharp cloth- and vinyl-interior décor. The design matured beautifully in 1956 to the point that there was little to choose between the New Yorker and the 300-series “halo” cars.
The 1956 New Yorker was one of the cleanest, most elegant designs of Exner’s career, boasting a unified front-end treatment with finely wrought horizontal grille bars over a winged bumper, hooded headlights and larger but smoothly flowing tailfins ending in prominent vertical tail lights. More than just a pretty face, the New Yorker embodied all of Chrysler’s formidable engineering, most notably in the highly potent Chrysler Fire Power Hemi V-8, increased from 331 CI in 1955 to 354 for 1956, with a corresponding increase in power from 250 to 280 HP. The 1956 Chrysler New Yorker was arguably at its most beautiful in the convertible form presented here.
Restored in frame-off fashion and completed in 2009, this 1956 New Yorker convertible is one of only 921 produced by Chrysler that year; significantly, it is now one of just 24 known to exist today. A model of understated elegance, it is handsomely finished in two-tone Desert Rose and Cloud White with a Tuxedo Black and white leather interior and black canvas convertible top. Genuine Chrysler chromed wire wheels and wide whitewall tires complete the car’s stylishly sophisticated presentation.
Equipped with the pushbutton PowerFlite 2-speed automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes, this rare New Yorker convertible also incorporates a unique Chrysler accessory custom steering wheel with a 15-jewel clock mounted in the hub.
