Having undergone a no-expense-spared restoration, this 1956 Chrysler New Yorker St. Regis wears its factory red, white and black exterior color combination and rolls on whitewall tires and wire wheels. Its rebuilt factory 354 CI V-8 engine is paired with an automatic transmission controlled by dashboard-mounted pushbuttons. The white interior has been restored with correct NOS materials, anchored by black carpeting and highlighted with pink-patterned fabric that’s reminiscent of the era. Nicely equipped with an in-dash clock, a pushbutton radio, tinted glass, power windows, a power bench seat, power steering and power brakes, this New Yorker St.
Regis was a true technical knockout for the day. For 1955, the Chrysler Corporation shed its largely 1940s styling with strikingly modern designs across the entire family, from Plymouth to Imperial. The Imperial shed the Chrysler moniker, becoming its own standalone division offering a four-door sedan, Newport two-door hardtop and the Crown Imperial eight-passenger limousine, either with or without a center divider. Imperial offered no convertibles that year, but built one for Chrysler Corporation President K.T. Keller.
To better round out the top of the Chrysler Division, the New Yorker line was comprised of the New Yorker Deluxe sedan, the New Yorker Deluxe Newport hardtops available in two- or four-door, the New Yorker Deluxe convertible and the New Yorker Deluxe St. Regis two-door hardtop. Available only as a two-door hardtop, the St. Regis ceased production at the end of 1956, but filled a bit of a gap left by the Imperial. Unofficially named for the ultra-luxe St. Regis Hotel in New York, the New Yorker St. Regis employed the Windsor’s chrome side spear to redefine color borders and offered three-tone paint schemes. Building on the color motif, the St.
Regis received a special two-tone steering wheel, unique interior fabrics, full carpeting and was available with a large swath of power amenities. Interestingly, the St. Regis option added a mere $44 to the cost of a New Yorker but held the aura of a much more upmarket car.
