Successor to the race proven (E9) 3.0CS/CSi high performance sports coupes, the 6-series was introduced in August 1976. More forgiving than its predecessors, it utilised a modified version of the (E12) 5-series saloon platform equipped with all-round independent suspension (coil and wishbone front, trailing-arm at the rear) and powerful disc brakes. A natural rival to the 928 and XJS, the four-seater 6-series it proved more capacious than the Porsche and sportier than the Jaguar. Immediately recognisable thanks to its distinctive 'shark nose' frontal styling and thin pillared glasshouse windows it boasts a real road presence. This impression is backed up by the various versions of BMW's mighty M30, SOHC straight-six engine that was fitted throughout the range..
All E24s were based on the M30 'big six' engine, all were 12 valve units, except the 24 valve M6 and the 630 was the only non-fuel-injected model. All 635 models were not born equal, in June 1982 the engine used was upgraded to the version from the Seven series, this used less fuel due to better computer control systems but despite having very little power difference it was seen as being far more desirable.
This particular car was supplied new on the 25/05/1987 by LJK Garages Ltd of Essex and has only had three recorded owners from new. Finished in Royal Blue Metallic with a contrasting cream leather interior, this particular example comes with sports seats that are trimmed in soft cream leather, the leather is in good condition throughout with only some minor cracking to the seat faces. The rest of the interior is also in good condition with no wear to the carpets or damage to any of the plastic trim. All the controls work just as they should, the steering wheel, gear stick and hand brake all retain a good texture and show little sign of wear, and the original Blaupunkt cassette player is still present.
This 635 has a very tidy engine bay and you can tell instantly it has been well maintained, all the mechanical bits are in fine order. The 4 speed switchable automatic gearbox pulls through the gears with ease, providing plenty of performance from the straight six engine. At the turn of the key the engine bursts into life first time and idles correctly up to working temperature with a deep, satisfying, full, exhaust note.
This mighty 6 looks menacing from all angles and the paintwork is in exceptional condition with a deep shine throughout, it has always been garaged and has only been used in later years as a second/occasional "Sunday vehicle'. There are only three recorded keepers from new and the 82,000 recorded miles are believed to be genuine.
It comes complete with 12 months MOT and represents a fantastic opportunity to own one of BMWs best ever motor cars.
