BMW has reached a huge milestone: the company has now built its one-millionth M car. And naturally, it chose a colour that makes hiding impossible — Fire Orange III.
The milestone car is a BMW M3 Competition, making the occasion even more significant as BMW marks 40 years since the original M3 arrived. But the more important car standing nearby may be the one that cannot yet be bought.
An electric M3 pre-production model offers a glimpse of where BMW’s performance division is heading. Production of the fully electric M3 is planned for 2027, the same year BMW says its factory will move to exclusively electric vehicle production.
That creates a difficult question. Can an electric M3 deliver the character that made the badge special in the first place?
Instant acceleration will not be enough. A proper M car needs steering that communicates, a chassis that inspires confidence and the ability to make an ordinary road feel worth driving the long way home. Can BMW create that experience without a combustion engine?
The electric powertrain itself is not the problem. It may give BMW new opportunities to build an exceptionally capable driver’s car.
Now it has to prove that the next M3 deserves its badge.
Would you give an electric M3 a chance?
