The 1969 and 1970 Boss 429 stands alone at the pinnacle of classic muscle-car era Mustangs. Created as a homologation special to qualify the new 429 CI “semi-hemi” engine for NASCAR competition, the Boss 429 was specially modified and hand-built at Ford’s outside racing and special projects contractor, Kar Kraft of Brighton, Michigan. The transformation from standard 428 Super Cobra Jet-equipped Mustang to Boss 429 involved extensively modifying each car’s front suspension by cutting and repositioning the shock towers and fitting redesigned upper control arms, stronger spindles and reinforcement bracings to accommodate the massive Boss engine. Only 857 cars were built in 1969, including this splendid example carrying Kar Kraft No. 1785. Built on May 8, 1969, and delivered to Don Shirk Ford in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, it is powered by a matching-numbers 820-T engine equipped with beefed production connecting rods and a hydraulic cam. Like all Boss 429s it incorporates a remote engine-oil cooler, heavy-duty Toploader close-ratio 4-speed transmission, 3.91:1 Traction-Lok differential, power front disc brakes, Competition Suspension with front and rear anti-roll bars and staggered rear shocks, a trunk-mounted battery, chromed 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels and Goodyear Polyglas F60-15 tires. The Deluxe Décor interior with console, Visibility Group, 8,000 RPM tachometer, front spoiler and color-keyed racing mirrors were also standard. At 33,960 original miles, it’s a highly original car with a single professional repaint in the original Wimbledon White, and KK No. 1785 further boasts the outstanding original black interior and undercarriage, the results of a meticulous concours preparation overseen by SAAC Head Judge Ed Meyer. With that kind of horsepower having escaped the barn, the big FE V-8 became a favorite for generations of Mustang enthusiasts wanting to unleash their own herd. Of course, the hunt for more horsepower has gotten easier with the passing decades of advancements in engine technology, and it is still possible to maintain a strong factory identification in vintage ponies such as this racy looking 1968 Mustang GT coupe. The success of this second-generation GT begins with a cosmetic package that looks like it could have leapt from the how-to pages of a period issue of “Hot Rod” or “Car Craft”: Wimbledon White paint with black side scallops, a black-vinyl roof treatment, black-spoked American Racing Torque Thrust alloy wheels wearing BF Goodrich raised white letter Radial T/A tires and fog lamps. Under the hood is the heart of the matter in the form of a 428 CI big-block V-8 rebuilt by Pat Burke. Bored .030-inches over, it has been fitted with a set of free-breathing aluminum heads from Edelbrock, who were also sourced for the aluminum intake manifold and 780 CFM 4-barrel carburetor with vacuum secondaries. MSD ignition fires the combustion process, with Hooker headers feeding a 2.5-inch custom exhaust system. A race-built automatic, a 1,200-stall converter by Jim Paquet and 4.30:1 Traction-Lok differential with 31-spline axles complete the heavy-duty drivetrain; subframe extensions, Cal-Tracs suspension and power front disc brakes provide sure-footed handling.
