A rarity, that high-strung little beast was the inspiration for the 2016 version that easily qualifies as the purest 911 on the road today. With decades of experience on tap, Porsche Motorsport engineers assembled a 911 that rewards driver input above all else, and that meant making it a blast to drive. The 2016 Porsche 911R tilts the scales at a feathery 3,020 pounds, and it draws much of its content from the GT3, including its naturally aspirated 4.0L 500 HP flat-6 powerplant. The fact that Porsche made this road rocket available only with an exclusive 6-speed manual transmission pleases über-purists, as nothing less is sufficient for putting the driver completely in charge on the road—although there is rev-matching available for those who don’t yet fully trust their own heel-and-toe skills. The GT3 was also the source for the 911R’s suspension, steering and braking systems, as well as its racy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and 20-inch center-lock alloy wheels. The 911R’s suspension and steering geometry are slightly less aggressive than those of the GT3, but the Porsche carbon-ceramic brakes possess the same incredible fade-free stopping power. Its lightweight body panels—carbon-fiber front fenders and hood, magnesium roof and carbon-fiber cockpit trim—offer the same weight savings as on the GT3. A shallower front splitter and retractable rear spoiler in place of the GT3’s fixed rear wing means less downforce, and that translates to a 200 MPH top speed, higher than both the GT3 and the GT3 RS. The 911 R is a wicked machine equipped with the 4.0L/500 HP direct-fuel-injected engine directly sourced from the 911 GT3 RS. The carbon-ceramic 4-wheel disc brakes are also shared with the 2016 GT3 RS. However, beyond these two mechanical common denominators, the two cars are very divergent in personality. Where the GT3 RS is an absolute extrovert that relies on advanced aerodynamics and uber sophistication, the 911 R is the embodiment of stark simplicity and minimalism, giving it an understated presence but packing stunning performance attributes. The 911 R is the spiritual successor to the 1967 911 R, Porsche’s first purpose-built 911-based race car. It weighed in at 350 pounds less than a stock 911 and was fitted with a 2.0L twin-plug engine pulled from the 906 race car. The original 911 R equation is so simple: less weight plus more horsepower equals one fast car. The 911 R subscribes to this same ethos, as it is a significant 110 pounds lighter than the GT3 RS and has less aerodynamic drag as a result of being built on the narrow-body 911 shell. With a total production run of only 991 units, owners of the Porsche 918 Spyder were given the first right of refusal for purchase of a 911 R. Its white paint, special blue stripes and black-painted GT3 center-lock wheels, just a few of the custom touches performed by Porsche’s Special Wishes Custom Tailoring service, pay homage to early factory racing Porsches, but the interior is anything but competition spartan. This one-of-a-kind car is the only 911 R with 18-way power seats. Taut black leather covers practically every surface, all with contrasting GT silver stitching that is also used on the leather-edged carbon fiber floor mats. Porsche’s outstanding Sport Chrono Package, air conditioning, a Bose Surround Sound System with HD radio receiver, power seats, navigation and illuminated carbon fiber doorsill guards add more functionality and convenience. The 911 R’s primary mission is as a performance Porsche honed to the finest edge, a task that begins with dropping the GT3’s free-revving 4.0L/500 HP naturally aspirated flat-6 engine into the R’s tail and connecting it to a special 6-speed manual gearbox exclusive to the 911 R via a reinforced clutch and optional single-mass flywheel that makes throttle response pop like that of a GT3 Cup racer.
