    Eccentrica V12 Roadster Takes the Diablo Topless

    Eccentrica is back with another wild interpretation of the Lamborghini Diablo. After introducing its fixed-roof V12 restomod in 2024, the Italian company is now taking the same formula into the open air with the new Eccentrica V12 Roadster. Described as an icon with ’90s character and modern precision, the Roadster completely re-engineers an early Diablo with more than 3,500 new components. The transformation includes redesigned aero, a reshaped rear wing, new splitters, lighter wheels and a carbon-reinforced steel chassis. Every body panel is made from carbon fiber, giving this classic V12 a distinctly modern edge. Power comes from a naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V-12 producing 550 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The engine spins to 7,000 rpm and sends its power through a six-speed gated manual transmission. Eccentrica has also recalibrated the ECU for sharper throttle response. Despite losing its roof, the Roadster is claimed to retain the coupe’s impressive 208-mph top speed. The most interesting detail? The official render appears to show a five-speed shifter despite Eccentrica specifying six gears. Whether that is simply a design detail remains to be seen. The Eccentrica V12 Roadster will make its official debut at The Quail on August 14 during Monterey Car Week. Production will be capped at just 19 examples, with each car customized to its owner. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but exclusivity certainly won’t come cheap. Would you rather have this roofless Diablo or the fixed-roof version? The 5.7L/530 HP V-12 engine and 5-speed manual transmission are harnessed by Lamborghini’s all-wheel drive Viscous Traction system, or simply “VT,” derived from the LM002 off-road vehicle. The interior is beautifully appointed with bucket seats, a gated shifter, VDO gauges, carpeted Lamborghini “Raging Bull”-branded floor mats and more to create a luxurious environment that’s great for any drive. Introduced at the Bologna Motor Show in December 1995, the Diablo roadster represented yet another step in building some of the most outrageously styled cars ever made. To create the roadster, Lamborghini implemented a number of changes above and beyond just cutting the roof off. It was truly an engineering masterpiece. The car received a new front bumper, new driving and marker lights, a new windscreen that was more dramatically raked with new A-pillars, new doors and beveled glass, new cooling ducts, a new engine cover, new body air intakes, new exhaust covers with restyled exhaust pipes, a new rear bumper, new rear wheel arches and new 17-inch wheels. All told, the effort gave the roadster a very slippery look that recalled the sportiness of bygone era roadsters. Aside from the styling, however, the body and chassis were stiffened without raising the weight of the car. The end result is an open-top car with equal rigidity to the closed Diablo coupe. Further exemplifying the engineering efforts bestowed upon the roadster, the roof panel weighs just 16.5-pounds. Crafted of two carbon fiber panels separated by insulation, it’s light enough that one person could lift it off; however, the size of the panel might call for two people, just to be on the safe side. For 1998, the 17-inch wheels were enlarged to 18 inches to accommodate larger brakes, and the engine delivered 530 HP. Restyled by Chrysler, which took majority ownership of the company from the Mimran Brothers in 1987, the Diablo was the result of three restyling exercises, the final edition coming from Chrysler studios in Michigan. It’s been said that Marcello Gandini, who designed the Lamborghini Miura and Countach before working on the Diablo, was so upset by the restyled car that he took the original styling concept and turned it into the Cizeta-Moroder V16T. As if that weren’t dramatic enough, the requirements for the new car called for a huge leap in performance, durability, comfort, drivability and an overall sense of modernity and futurism. Some specifics of the Diablo would be a top speed of at least 196 MPH and the ability to idle in the warmest of weather with the air conditioning on without overheating. The electrical system needed to be comprised of better components, and the clutch pedal needed to be slightly easier to depress. All of the goals were achieved, and early tests with the new 5.7L/485 HP DOHC 48-valve V-12 engine revealed it could top 202 MPH, making it the fastest street-legal production Lamborghini ever built. The company was also very diligent at improving upon the Diablo with various sub-models and engineering enhancements through the years, one being the all-wheel drive Diablo VT introduced in 1993. This 1995 Diablo VT hails from the estate of Arlen Ness, a famous motorcycle designer, builder and entrepreneur. Showing nearly 44,955 kilometers, the car is finished in red with quad exhaust tips, polished alloy wheels paired with BF Goodrich g-Force T/A tires and a rear wing. The black leather interior is piped in red and features the signature gated shifter for the 5-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, power windows, a clock, an Alpine AM/FM/CD stereo and instrumentation including a tachometer.
