The gorgeously curvaceous, lithe, front-engined roadster was designed by Albrecht von Goertz, whose fingerprints were on a number of significant sports cars of the 1950s and ‘60s. All 507s were powered by BMW’s own all-aluminum 2.6L overhead-valve V-8 backed only by a manual transmission; they were rare, expensive and excellent performers. The proverbial rich and famous owned them, including the original “Bond Girl,” actress Ursula Andres, the incomparable Fred Astaire, racing drivers Hans Stuck (Sr) and John Surtees, Formula 1 kingpin Bernie Ecclestone, and none other than Elvis Presley. The 507 could be had with a conventional folding convertible top or with a removable hardtop, and just 252 were built between 1956 and 1960. A popular BMW, the 507’s primary design themes were recalled in the BMW Z8 roadster that appeared in the 1999 James Bond film, “The World Is Not Enough.” A few 507s competed in international rally competition, but the factor never produced an official racing version. BMW’s 502 coupe and cabriolet shared much of the 507’s chassis architecture, suspension and its V-8 power and drivetrain. This fabulous 507 Competition Prototype recreation is based on a 502 donor car and designed and built to replicate a 507 competition model, had one been produced in the 1950s. The coachwork, entirely handbuilt in Argentina, is crafted in aluminum and quite faithful to the original street car’s look, save for some racier details such as the lack of exterior door handles, bumpers and the use of a Plexiglas racing windscreen. This bespoke machine also employs 15-inch wheels, as opposed to the original’s 14-inch wheels. The original dual-carburetor intake system has been binned in favor of a competition-style four 2-barrel carburetor setup, and the car will be sold as a prototype racing car on a bill of sale only. For those who fancy a bit of vintage racing or a go at Colorado Grand, California Mille or Copper State 1000 style road rallying, this elegant, ‘50s-style road racer is an opportunity to do it in fine style. https://www.mecum.com/lots/487858/1957-bmw-502/
