The Volvo EX40 Is Over
Volvo is saying goodbye to the Volvo EX40, with the 2026 model marking the electric compact SUV’s final year in the U.S. The nameplate itself lasted just two model years, but the same vehicle had already spent four years on the market as the XC40 Recharge. The decision comes as the EX40 struggled to match the sales of its gasoline-powered sibling, the XC40, which has just received another update for the 2028 model year. The EX40 offered a rear-mounted electric motor with 248 hp in entry versions, while dual-motor models delivered 402 hp and all-wheel drive. Despite its modest sales, the EX40 brought a convincing mix of Scandinavian luxury and strong performance, particularly in dual-motor form. Fortunately, Volvo may not be abandoning the segment for long. A rumored Volvo EX50 is reportedly scheduled to arrive in fall 2027 as a 2028 model. It should be slightly longer and taller than the EX40, move to Volvo’s new SPA3 platform and potentially start at around $40,000. Was the EX40 simply too early for its market? Could the cheaper EX50 finally give Volvo a stronger EV hit?
