    Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible, 1959

Chassis No.: M296104580 Auction: Fran and Ron Green's Verde Classics Museum Collection 2013 Auction date: February 23, 2013 Lot No.: S52 $58,300 | Sold • Body: Convertible • Golden Commando engine • Automatic transmission • 4-barrel carburetor • Dual exhaust • Swivel bucket seats • Power steering • Power brakes • Dual antennas • Power convertible top • Dash clock • Wheel covers • Wide whitewall tires • Flame Red with Black soft top Plymouth inserted the Sport version of its popular Fury line in 1959. Identified by the large medallion at the rear of each tailfin, the Sport Fury offered buyers Imperial-grade grandeur on a lesser budget and helped Plymouth maintain its position within the Big Three. It was the last year for the design and, to Fury fans, the best of a great vintage that made full use of styling chief Virgil Exner’s imagination in such features as the imitation rear spare tire cover, wraparound beltline and swivel bucket seats. This smart-looking 1959 Sport Fury convertible embodies those features along with the Golden Commando engine with the optional “Superpak” 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust that raised its rating to 260 HP; a pushbutton-controlled automatic was still the order of the day along with power steering and brakes. A Black power convertible top, in-dash clock, dual antennas, full wheel covers and wide Whitewall tires give this Flame Red Sport Fury convertible the full load of Fifties flash. https://www.mecum.com/lots/146934/1959-plymouth-sport-fury-convertible/

    Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible, 1959

Chassis No.: M293105419 Auction: Monterey 2022 Auction date: August 20, 2022 Lot No.: S60.1 $60,000 | High bid • Exterior: Blue • Interior: Blue • Body: Convertible • 361 CI V-8 Golden Commando engine • 4-barrel carburetor • Automatic transmission • Power top • Power steering • Power brakes • Swivel bucket seats • Real wire wheels • Wide Whitewall radial tires When Plymouth introduced its newly styled 1955 lineup, Chrysler executives were holding their breath, hoping the designs weren’t too radically over-the-top compared to the outgoing 1954s. As it turned out, the new cars were well received, and as such, confidence was up a bit among the executives when Plymouth sharpened up the styling for 1956 and introduced the Fury. However, Plymouth buyers were still a very traditional lot; those working for the division were hyper aware of that fact and the Fury was a far cry from traditional. But the hope was that both the new styling and the sporty, even flashy, Fury would broaden the overall customer base while encouraging current customers that good things were happening at Plymouth. The Fury was based on the Belvedere’s familiar body, but it packed a 303/240 HP V-8 engine that would spin the Fury from 0-60 MPH in just 10 seconds. The day it debuted at the Chicago Auto Show, it ran the Flying Mile at Daytona at 124 MPH. The following month, equipped with two 4-barrel carburetors, it reached nearly 145 MPH. Specially equipped throughout, Furys brought distinctive interiors, a noteworthy engine, revised chassis dynamics and the unique color scheme to the showroom and cost a healthy $2,866 base—about $650 more than a posh Belvedere. Buyers supported the Fury to the tune of 4,485 sold, enough to make Plymouth and Chrysler executives sit up and take notice. It also encouraged them to sustain production of the Fury package through 1958. For 1959, Plymouths were restyled again and the Fury became a standalone brand, with the new Sport Fury as the top offering. Available as a coupe or convertible, the Sport Fury pressed Belvedere down a notch along with the Savoy, completely eliminating the Plaza. This 1959 Sport Fury Convertible presents as an exquisite example of Plymouth’s topline car and is extraordinarily well equipped. Elegantly finished in blue, the upscale Plymouth is fitted with twin rear antennas, twin sideview mirrors, rocker molding trim and real wire wheels with wide whitewall radial tires. The interior is upholstered with blue-and-white, patterned cloth with turquoise vinyl, matching the exterior very well. The lengthy roster of options continues with the 361 CI Golden Commando V-8 engine paired with an automatic transmission and a 4-barrel carburetor, a power convertible top, swivel bucket seats with a fold-down center armrest, a padded passenger-side dashboard, an in-dash clock, AM radio, power steering and power brakes. https://www.mecum.com/lots/534712/1959-plymouth-sport-fury-convertible/

    Plymouth Sport Fury, 1959

Chassis No.: M294100126 Auction: Monterey 2019 Auction date: August 17, 2019 Lot No.: S94 $80,000 | High bid • Exterior: Bronze/White • Interior: Bronze • 118 inch wheelbase • 318/260 HP OHV V-8 engine • Cast iron block • 9.0:1 compression • Carter AFB 4-barre carburetor • Dual exhaust • Pushbutton automatic transmission • Semi-floating rear axle • Independent torsion bar front suspension • Longitudinal rear leaf spring suspension • Power steering • Power hydraulic drum brakes • Bronze Metallic with White roof • Bronze vinyl interior with patterned cloth inserts • Padded dash • Pushbutton radio • Full size wheel covers • Whitewall tires With the decade concluding, many consider that Plymouth saved the best for last. The stylish lines of the 1957 release blossomed into fitted fins and chrome-laden accents on the 1959 Sport Fury. Indeed, the stylish idea of power resulted in one advertisement from that model season that showed the car amidst the charging steeds at that start of a horse race at Florida’s Hialeah Park, “Full of Fury and Ready to Run!” While positioned toward a lower-cost market segment of buyers, there was nothing small about this 118-inch wheelbase machine, which in this case is powered by the polyspherical 318 A-series OHV engine rated at 260 HP and featuring a cast iron block, 9.0:1 compression, a Carter AFB 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. This engine is in turn backed by an automatic transmission with pushbutton operation and a semi-floating rear axle design. Chrysler engineers had only recently debuted the Torsion-Aire independent torsion bar front suspension, coupled here with longitudinal rear leaf springs, power steering and power hydraulic drum brakes. With body lines from the creative genius of Virgil Exner, the exterior of this hardtop Fury is appointed in rich Bronze Metallic paint with a white-painted roof, replete with the faux decklid wheel cover, widening side spears, gold-toned Fury trim and broadly fashioned bumpers. Inside is a bronze-hue vinyl interior with patterned tone-matched cloth inserts, a padded dash, the pushbutton radio, two-spoke steering wheel and Jet Age dash appointments. With its full-size wheel covers and whitewall tires, the result is an epic representation of late 1950s automotive styling. The uniquely chosen angles to the fins, cab pillars, grille and wheel openings were part of what led to Exner’s fame in this era. As Chrysler’s best known response to the basic Chevrolet and Ford brands, most Sport Furys of this era did not survive the rigors of shifting cultural desires, making cars like this 1959 example both desirable and exclusive in the modern collector car market. https://www.mecum.com/lots/381056/1959-plymouth-sport-fury/
