Immediately after partnering with McLaren in 1995 to contest for the Formula 1 World Championship, Mercedes-Benz resurrected the historic SLR designation to do what it had not done in 40 years: produce a road-going supercar car using the latest in Grand Prix racing technology. In 1955, the resulting product was the 300SL Gullwing coupe and its roadster counterpart, both instant classics based on the contemporary W196 Grand Prix cars and 300SLR sports racers. In 2003, McLaren-Mercedes introduced the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, a car that conjured both the 300SLR of old and the modern Formula 1 McLaren, and followed that in 2007 with the SLR McLaren Roadster. Both are wonders of 21st century technology, beginning with the core structure: a body shell and chassis made entirely from high-strength carbon fiber composites. Details such as the butterfly wing doors, large lateral fender vents and chromed side pipes evoke the 300SLR, while the arrow-shaped nose and twin-fin front spoiler are clear McLaren F1 references. The SLR uses a hand-built supercharged 5.4L/617 HP V-8 engine, AMG SPEEDSHIFT R 5-speed automatic transmission and limited-slip differential to produce blazing acceleration and a top speed of 207 MPH. F1 technology dictated the design of the SLR’s suspension system, a compendium of double wishbones with coil springs and front sway bar, traction and stability controls, four-corner leveling and Michelin Pilot Sport tires on 19-inch forged chrome vented wheels guaranteeing a superb ride at any speed. Introduced in 2003, the SLR McLaren coupe was followed in 2007 with an even racier Roadster that, like the coupe, was based on an advanced lightweight carbon fiber chassis reinforced with built-in crash protection zones and providing the most rigid structure possible for the car’s forged aluminum wishbone suspension system, which is managed by Mercedes-Benz’s stability control system and supplemented with carbon ceramic disc brakes with ABS and Electronic Brake Force Distribution. Thundering through chromed side pipes exiting behind the front wheels in classic SLR fashion, the SLR’s enormously powerful 5.4L supercharged, double-intercooled V-8 engine is hand built by AMG to produce 617 HP and 575 lb-ft of torque. That translates into mind-boggling acceleration to 60 MPH in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 207 MPH with contributions from the paddle-shifted, electronically controlled AMG Speedshift R 5-speed automatic transmission and three manual shift modes. As was the case with the roadster version of the original 300SL, many purists prefer the SLR Roadster’s silhouette to that of the coupe; whatever one’s preference, this 2008 example shows off delicious beauty from any angle, top up or down, a sight made even more compelling when the factory gullwing-style doors are lifted to reveal the SLR’s sumptuous cockpit.
